CalPortland obtained the Washington Aggregates and Concrete Affiliation (WACA) 2019 Awards for Excellence in Concrete Development “Grand Award” for its work on the Alaskan Means Viaduct Substitute Program SR-99 Tunnel.

The practically 2-mile-long tunnel has two stacked 32-foot-wide roadways — two southbound lanes over two northbound lanes — and options state-of-the-art hearth detection, suppression, and air flow methods and a safety system with closed-circuit TVs.

“The Alaskan Means Viaduct Substitute SR-99 Tunnel is an iconic concrete construction and at 57 half of toes in diameter, is the biggest comfortable bored tunnel shaft in North America,” says WACA Government Director Bruce Chattin in a press launch. “As one of many largest infrastructure initiatives within the U.S., the alternative of the Alaskan Means Viaduct with the SR-99 Tunnel reworked Seattle’s growing old waterfront into a contemporary transportation hall.”

Concrete was the first materials used on the challenge, together with pre-cast concrete tunnel segments for the liner, pre-cast panels for the northbound decks, pre-cast bridge girders on the north cut-and-cover construction, and cast-in-place concrete for drilled shafts and roadway constructions.Practically 100 variations of concrete combine designs have been used on the challenge.

Development of the southbound roadway was achieved concurrently with the boring, beginning roughly 500 toes behind the tunnel boring machine, synchronized to maintain each tunnel building and highway building operations in sequence and on schedule. The challenge required precision timing and placement of 220,000 cubic yards of cast-in-place concrete; 130,000 cubic yards of structural foundations, roadways, partitions, and decks contained in the portals, tunnel, and buildings; and 90,000 cubic yards of shoring piles, excavation help, and momentary constructions.

“We’re extremely happy with our total challenge workforce who labored tirelessly to soundly ship this difficult challenge inside the aggressive schedule,” says Scott Nicholson, vp and common supervisor CalPortland WA Supplies Division, within the press launch. “CalPortland continues to offer innovation, skilled experience, and the highest-quality services and products for probably the most advanced and demanding building initiatives.”
